Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tossed cold water on the prospect of reinstating the assault weapons ban, highlighting Democrats reluctance to take on gun issues.

Attorney General Eric Holder raised the prospect Wednesday that the administration would push to bring back the ban. But Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Thursday that he never talked to her. The Speaker gave a flat no when asked if she had talked to administration officials about the ban.

On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now, Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. I think it's clear the Bush administration didnt do that.

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who dont want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association.

The White House declined to comment on Holder's remarks, referring reporters to the Department of Justice. The DoJ did not respond to The Hill's request for comment.

I think she knows it's a loser of an issue for them. They have won seats on the house the last two elections, but if guns become a front burner issue again, odds are they will give some back.

The AG can talk all he wants, I doubt congress will take action.

What is real?...what isn't?...thats the question that I often
ask myself when things like this happen.

Do they all use the same play book or not?..I thought
they did.

And if they do why even use a play like this?

Gun sales through the roof.

Strong rumors of some kind of ban.

Then it gets shut down.

Very interesting...

I'm not sure to be honest, but i have heard similar statements from NRA and like groups when arguing about new gun laws. I would be curious to know as well.

Anyone getting the idea that this administration likes to float policy polls by having an underling make a comment on it? Remember the mileage tax that got the kabash within hours of its announcement? They are probing our defenses folks.

They may be trying to elicit a response from the general public before they commit, which is like sticking your wet finger in the wind. (Cowards)

From all of the responses I have been reading on the net, not to mention the response from my peers in uniform, they may have bitten off more than they can chew and now they are back pedaling. Either way, we will be ready. Stay vigilant.

Simple,

People in government would not only be fools, but braindead idiots if they
did not take the steep rise in gun sales as a very big SHTF warning sign.

BINGO. They don't want a run on firearms like they saw from the election scare. You can bet they are working on it behind the scenes quietly. Just like I got a call at 6:00 a.m. in the morning commanding me to shut down my penny business -- no warning at all.

Not the ones about presidents having to be citizens, or the ethics ones about paying income taxes, or the ones about people not raising money to be appointed senators.

No kidding. The BATF is famous for reinterpreting the law at a whim and winning all of their cases.

Re: Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban

The Dems are giddy and close to drunk with their new found power. They assume that they are now ascendant, able to accomplish simultaneously all of their aims. A few of them remember the reaction to the 1993 ban. Even Clinton admits that it was principly that ban that cost them their power for 12 years.

Guns are the tripwire for America. I fully believe and hope that whichever group really lays the cards on the table in an effort to disarm us will find that they have made a huge error.

At first, my reaction to the idea of "testing the waters" was: "WTF did they think people's reaction would be?" and then I realized: They are seeing how the liberals and centrists(swing votes) will react. So much for bi-partisanship.

I'm actually seeing prices on SKSs falling back under $300 (on the street -- dealers still want $300-$400).

Re: Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban

They are going to put parts of the gun bill in several different bills. Like the child safer act say a person under 18 can no longer own or use a gun. Under that health bill it says that anyone who has pts or mental problems can't own a gun. Also, they will stop sending out those yellow forms that have to be filled out when you buy a gun. On that form it says you can not make a copy, have to use the original fed issuied. So one bill might not be passed for all gun bands but bits and pieces in every other bill.

Why bother with the guns when you can just go after the ammo?

Make no mistake about it, one way or another, they will be trying to infringe your right to protect yourselves.

Wait for it.

Or rather, prepare for it.

Re: Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban

I doubt this was Pelosi's idea. If you only watched the presidential campaign last year, you might have missed that a fair number of the Democrats elected came out in support of gun rights, the 2A, and are even long standing members of the NRA (which puts them in better standing than John McCain ever was). The 30 or 40 of them who campaigned that way went to Madam Speaker and said that if this reached a vote on the floor it would be defeated. Pelosi might remember 1994, but more to the point, she does not want to be held responsible for a Democratic House saying NO to the Obamassiah.

Things will change the next time a conservative leaves the SCOTUS.

Phaedrus 03-01-2009 11:49 AM

Re: Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban

It's Eric Holder, the Attorney General.

He's a gun-grabber and spoke on his intended policy without consulting Obama first.

It's not the first time he's inserted his foot-in-mouth the last month. Eric Holder is Obama's Andrew Young:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Young

Democrats will not benefit by getting in a legislative "fight" with gun owners. Pelosi knows this and even perhaps Obama.

Eric Holder is the worst pick for AG that Obama could make, IMO. All of the damn problems we have, and he wants to start gun-ban legislation fights - without consulting Obama and Congress first!

This country is so screwed.
